A sit-tight is a less serious form of lock-down. Passing periods are canceled and students stay in their current class for continued instruction or studying, said district spokesman Bill Bailey. It’s often done to keep students out of the halls to give a student privacy. Typically, more than a dozen sit-tights take place in district schools annually, he said.
Thursday’s sit-tight lasted roughly from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The disciplinary problem did not involve weapons and other students were not at risk, Bailey said.

Stop pretending that beating kids into submission does anything good. There is a reason the 60's and 70's happened. You old tymers started the rebellion anyhoo.
Kids don't listen to them, their parents were bitching about them too. They just forget. This generation is so tolerant and has access to amazing things. Kids are curing diseases. Your best is better than our best and your worst isn't even close to our worst (h.s.kid in the mid 90's). We are the ones who are f'ing up this world not you, so just ignore us!
I do expect to see the demise of the public school. Not for what is being taught. But for all the special considerations give for all the special things.
Fact is private school set the rules and if parents are not happy they can sent their kids some place else. Public school get to pamper every whim and can not say to the unhappy camper try some place else.
You never want a serious crisis go to waste , after all...
The horrah..........the horrah
Did you READ the article or just go on assuming like most commentators do on this website?
All schools have a lock down procedure. Frankly, it's no one's business what was going on with that student. That's why these policies are in place. Only nosey parents would want to know. Like said comment before mine, students who witnessed it will most likely spread the "news" like wildfire. I hope that satisfies your dire need to know whose child was having issues. Would you like to know so you can turn your nose up when you see the parent or student in the future?
Can't you be satisfied that it wasn't something serious such as a weapon? God forbid parents and citizens of Fairbanks try to lift this policy of protection. They were only implemented to keep your students safe.
My questions is why this incident warranted an article in the paper. That would lead more privacy violation than the actual "sit-tight."
Apparently, not very far.
Private schools can pick and choose their kids. Public schools are stuck with ALL children, regardless of their issues. And believe you me, kids these days have some hellacious issues. Just think, middle schoolers have only been alive since the late 90s. Our culture has had some pretty warped values since the nineties, and they're getting worse every year. We don't give a rat's ass what kids are exposed to in America. Money rules, not values. And no, parents cannot possibly protect their children from society at large unless they live in a cave.
http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/consuming-kids/ This video, 'Consuming Kids,' may give you some clue as to what parents and kids are up against these days.
Private Schools sadly, have a tendency to sweep things under the rug. I went to a private school where all that mattered was your parents W2 and your last name.
Just to be real here, the problem 99% of the time is related to the home life of the student (or lack there of). The Schools are just trying to do the best they can to educate every student that comes their way. It's not perfect but its what we have, either become part of the solution or continue being the problem.
