FAIRBANKS — Ryan Middle School students spent some extra time in one of their classes Thursday afternoon, doing a sit-tight exercise to give a parent time to pick up a student who was having a disciplinary problem.

A sit-tight is a less serious form of lock-down. Passing periods are canceled and students stay in their current class for continued instruction or studying, said district spokesman Bill Bailey. It’s often done to keep students out of the halls to give a student privacy. Typically, more than a dozen sit-tights take place in district schools annually, he said.

Thursday’s sit-tight lasted roughly from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The disciplinary problem did not involve weapons and other students were not at risk, Bailey said.

Were all the kids with the exception of the one in question treated as individuals ?

This time and place is better than any in history. Stop looking back at the old days like an old boyfriend (as in you only remember the good stuff). The time when kids got their butts beat has passed for a reason. I'd rather they do this and treat people like individuals, than go back to the 50's any day. Yes people were obedient but were they HAPPY?

Stop pretending that beating kids into submission does anything good. There is a reason the 60's and 70's happened. You old tymers started the rebellion anyhoo.

Kids don't listen to them, their parents were bitching about them too. They just forget. This generation is so tolerant and has access to amazing things. Kids are curing diseases. Your best is better than our best and your worst isn't even close to our worst (h.s.kid in the mid 90's). We are the ones who are f'ing up this world not you, so just ignore us!

Well all we need to do is find a way to stop every ambulance chasing attorney from finding reasons to sue schools and maybe, just maybe, some of these things would go away. But I'm a realist and the reality of today everyone has a special kid that is suppose to be given special treatment of their attorney will be there instantly.

I do expect to see the demise of the public school. Not for what is being taught. But for all the special considerations give for all the special things.

Fact is private school set the rules and if parents are not happy they can sent their kids some place else. Public school get to pamper every whim and can not say to the unhappy camper try some place else.

Maybe Ryan middle School can be renamed Rahm Emanuel Middle School.

You never want a serious crisis go to waste , after all...

The school was not "shut-down" as you all are putting it. Teachers continued the current class with instruction. It also gave more time for studying which may have been beneficial to these students.

Did you READ the article or just go on assuming like most commentators do on this website?

All schools have a lock down procedure. Frankly, it's no one's business what was going on with that student. That's why these policies are in place. Only nosey parents would want to know. Like said comment before mine, students who witnessed it will most likely spread the "news" like wildfire. I hope that satisfies your dire need to know whose child was having issues. Would you like to know so you can turn your nose up when you see the parent or student in the future?

Can't you be satisfied that it wasn't something serious such as a weapon? God forbid parents and citizens of Fairbanks try to lift this policy of protection. They were only implemented to keep your students safe.

I will take a moment to say thank you to the school for detaining the change of class, so they could work with a child who had problems. Not knowing what the situation was, one can only wonder, but stop and think - what if this is an emotionally challenged child who had a melt down? Have you ever experienced an autistic child in the middle of a melt down? I know they can become physical with anyone in contact. I choose to believe the school acted in the best interest of all.

If our students were detained for an hour and a half, in a public school, it seems we the citizens have a right to know what was going on.

Actually, they are 'detained' all day. Where were they GOING? The kids got home at the same time right? It didn't mess up bussing or after school activities? Deep breath 'citizens' it's not a conspiracy to keep you like a mushroom.

"Privacy"? in a middle school? As if it wouldn't spread like wildfire as to who and what the problem was? Seems like the whole school is punished for what one kid does, and if they're in no danger, I don't understand why they "shut down" the whole school for one problem kid. Seems like there would be more privacy if the entire school wasn't shut down to focus everyone's attention on the problem, and now it's in the newspaper! Seems to me that "privacy" plan backfired.

My child is a Ryan student and did not know at all what had happened or who was involved. She made a guess that it involved a special education class because of something she saw in the hall, but admitted that was a guess.

My questions is why this incident warranted an article in the paper. That would lead more privacy violation than the actual "sit-tight."

june is right how far has our schools went. no wonder parents home school. in fact i venture in the future we will see more home schooling so parents can control their children as the school has no inclanation to correct children. the more i learn about our schools the more i am in favor of home schooling or private schooling, as the public schools can not get the job done. look at all the private schools in the bourough and most seem to be doing well and have minimal problems.

"june is right how far has our schools went."

Apparently, not very far.

"School has no inclination to correct children"? Really, mcgillagorilla? The kid in question is being removed from school. Their procedure may be lacking, but the kid was removed. What do you suggest they do, beat them? Cane them?

Private schools can pick and choose their kids. Public schools are stuck with ALL children, regardless of their issues. And believe you me, kids these days have some hellacious issues. Just think, middle schoolers have only been alive since the late 90s. Our culture has had some pretty warped values since the nineties, and they're getting worse every year. We don't give a rat's ass what kids are exposed to in America. Money rules, not values. And no, parents cannot possibly protect their children from society at large unless they live in a cave.

http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/consuming-kids/ This video, 'Consuming Kids,' may give you some clue as to what parents and kids are up against these days.

Henry, I know for a fact, that sentence of yours would not make it past the teachers at Ryan. :-)

"Look at all the private schools in the borough and most seem to be doing well and have minimal problems."

Private Schools sadly, have a tendency to sweep things under the rug. I went to a private school where all that mattered was your parents W2 and your last name.

Just to be real here, the problem 99% of the time is related to the home life of the student (or lack there of). The Schools are just trying to do the best they can to educate every student that comes their way. It's not perfect but its what we have, either become part of the solution or continue being the problem.

am I the only one who thinks that stopping the whole school because one kid needs their butt cracked is ridiculous? are we trying to sensationalize these things or pull bad behavior away from the group and 'give them privacy' in private? I understand what has been going on in our schools since columbine but seriously, stopping school because kids are acting like kids (or their parents in some cases) only makes these things worse.
