“They were all very, very close,” Lathrop assistant coach Gayle Hazen said after the match. “We had three or four matches that extended to the third set and a lot of tie breakers. It was all such fun.”
Lathrop’s Jay Kristeller knocked off the Wolfpack’s Thomas Lees in boys No. 1 singles, 6-5, 3-6, 7-4, and Alex Jordan defeated Ryan Howdeshell, 5-6, 6-3, 7-3, to complete a Lathrop sweep in boys singles action.
Jeremy Weaver and Robbie Vehmeier picked up the only boys wins for West Valley defeating Kade Fitzgerald and Connor Hajdukovich, 6-4, 6-4, in boys doubles.
The Wolfpack found more success and kept the match close throughout the girls sets.
Katie McCaffrey won girls No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3, over Lathrop’s Tori Toms, and Nettie Larson and Jill Phillips beat Yiting Zheng and Nicole Rogers, 6-5, 6-3, in girls doubles.
Lathrop’s sole girls victory came from Mac Calvillo who beat West Valley’s Catherine Sample, 6-5, 4-6, 8-6.
Proving Hazen correct and keeping things interesting, the match came down to the mixed doubles set.
Amber Lien and Aven Bross brought home the match win for Lathrop with their 6-5, 6-2 win over Chris Irvwin and Karen Jorgenson.
Prep tennis action continues today with Monroe Catholic traveling to take on the Patriots at North Pole High School and the Eielson Ravens and Hutchison Hawks battling at the Athletic Club South. Both matches are scheduled for 5 p.m.
