Hi arctic cam'ers, yesterday there was a nice spring rain shower, the streets were all wet. I wondered how long before they would dry, turns not long as shown in this three hour time compressed to 12 seconds clip.

mrsp, How far North did you live for it to be dark all day long? Here in Fairbanks we still have the sun above the horizon for a few hours even on the winter solstice. There are more hours with the sky colours absolutely fantastic pastels. Sure beats the quickie sunrises and sunsets they have Outside.
Hi everyone, It really doesn't matter what time of the year you go to Fairbanks its besutiful anyway you look at it.. I know all of you that are going for the first time you will take lots of picture I did. I guess i can't say enough about Alaska.. Fairbanks is my favorite.. And everyone is soooooooooo nice and helpful. So have a great visit or if your moving enjoy all the beauty it has to offer.. Have a great day. Harriett from Georgia.
baggerron,
Have you ever been to Alaska? If not you are in for a real treat!!! You will absolutely love it and seeing family too is just a double treat....
My brother-in-law lives in Fairbanks and we were there last June and it was wonderful....so much so we want to move there, my husband was born there so he is just ready to be home again...
Have a great time and wave to us...
Liz
Good morning everybody....... I used to live in fairbanks and i do miss it terribly, Never thought i would miss not being there but i do.. The guy on the bike i think his name is coop, he was a really good friend of mine and he works at the big I.
Hi Elezabeth McCollough
My Nephew has been in Fairbanks for about 35yrs he has a wife and 3 kids who were all born in Alaska.I will be in Fairbanks and will be taking by son and nephew for long rides on the alaska roads with our motorcycles or they will be taking me and enjoying it all.
Cant wait to be there.
RON
When we lived up there it was much harder for me to adjust to the darkness in the winter. I can handle the daylight at night because you can cover the windows to be able to sleep at night, however for it to be dark when it should be light...all day long...was extremely difficult for me to adjust to.
baggerron,
Tell your nephew Hello from Florida...is he in the military?
Liz
Hey all, it's just at 3am Iowa time and it's weird to see daylight at just after midnight in Fairbanks. To me, I think the midnight sun would be more harder to adjust to than the lack of daylight in the winter. Is that accurate?
Personally, I don't mind the shorter days during the winter months.
HAY Folks in Fairbanks
The man in news minor parking next to the motor cycle is my nephew,I'm in Calif and I asked my nephew to wave to me as I called him on my cell phone today in the afternoon, what a great way to stay in touch and see your family!
Like Bonnie mentioned, The sky is so incredible in Alaska. I don't know if it's just me, but I think the sky is 70 times bigger than the central US.
And the moon is huge. They just seem so much closer to the earth.
I also think you can see every type of cloud formation known to man, all at one time in the sky there.
another visitor.......taking a picture of the building/webcam?
See peple in the near parking lot.........looks like man is on cell phone....are they there for us to see?
Looks like some dark rain clouds (spring showers?) looming out there on the southern horizon this afternoon. And the trees are suddenly green & full, what a quick transformation from just 10 days ago.
Hi All!
Responding to the interest in earthquakes experienced in the Fairbanks area, I was at Murphy Dome during the Great Good Friday Earthquake in 1964. I remember being in the Air Force Station’s library, reading a magazine, when I suddenly felt a bit queasy, looked up to see the bookshelf on the opposite side of the room very gently swaying in one direction as I moved in the opposite direction. No shock, just a gentle movement, like being in a canoe. The magazine was returned to the rack and I walked out into the rec hall, only to hear mutterings about the billiard balls rolling slightly on the tables. Later, I learned that the Airmen in the NCO Club put down what they were drinking, got up and walked out, thinking they had one too many. Also, it was reported that the DJ at KFAR(?) was beside himself, with the needle bouncing from groove to groove of his two turntables. Very soon, on the radar site, the sirens went off…..we had lost communication with HQ in Anchorage. A planeload of GIs enroute to Elmendorf turned around & returned to Seattle (no communication).
We do experience about 4 earthquakes a year in the NY metro area which are rarely of a magnitude which can be felt.
HankB
VerbumSap,
I'm wondering that too about the guy at the motorcycle...I keep clicking to refresh but all I see him doing is walking around his bike. Maybe I can catch a wave if I keep trying.
Liz
There's a man talking on his cell phone while standing beside a motorcycle in the newsminer parking lot. I wonder if he's doing it for someone at 'home' to be able to see him?
Everybody WAVE BIG!
Thanks all for your comments and help. Don't worry, I have no fear. I just never really thought of Alaska getting earthquakes. I just found it to be very intresting. And yes, I still wanna live in the golden heart city! To those of you with love ones over seas, tell them that jmailman1999 said thank you for their service!
Dear JOprenov:
Just checked in with Arctic Cam....and found your comments about Fairbanks to be so correct.
I was in Fairbanks last September and found the Fairbanksans to be the most unaffected, down to earth, and genuine folks I've met.
We stayed in a local B&B and were so pleased to get to know our host and his friends. I felt that when I came there is was like home.
And I so agree about your Healy sunsets comment. I rented a small apartment there on a dirt road (what isn't dirt?) with a local family. The sunsets were a glorious display of pigments and pastels all against such vast and far reaching vistas. Even the night that 70 mile an hour wind gusts rattled and caused the house to sigh and shudder the sunset was spectacular. Clouds rolled and morphed into a variety of shapes against the darkening sky.
It was a vibrant display of the forces of nature. It stays with me...even now.
CYBA- My Son is also stationed at Ft. Wainwright he has been there for three years (1 spent in Iraq) he also loves it; born and raised in the Fla Keys. I went up in September 2006 after after he got back from overseas and it is a beautiful state and the people are a delight. If you get the chance to visit your Grandson, do so. God bless and keep your Grandson safe in his deployment. I send prayers to all over there everyday ,my Son has been twice.
I would worry more about the mosquito than earthquakes or even bears. Those little fellers are mean. Not so much in town but take a drive, get out and take a picture of a moose and see how it takes them to show up.
jmailman - I'm in New Jersey. I felt the ground shake once. It was about a 3, give or take a few tenths. The epicenter was about 60 miles from me. But the earthquakes here travel further due to the relative lack of faults that would dissipate the energy. I was in CA when there was about a 5.3 in Bakersfield. I was 100 miles away and felt nothing.
Hello to all the Artic Cam addicts- So many talk about the beauty of Fairbanks and all. My grandson is stationed at Ft Wainwright, and has been there since December. This is his first duty station after Ft Benning, GA. There is not a day that goes by that he tells his mom that he is one of the luckiest guys in the world to be stationed in Alaska. Even in the winter, he loved it. He is always sending videos/pictures via his phone to his mom showing her some of the beauty of where he is. He loves the outdoors and even though he is soon to be deployed to Iraq, I consider it a blessing that he has been allowed to see Alaska before he leaves. We will be there shortly (first week in June) to see it firsthand. Everyone have a nice day!!
I was born & raised in Fairbanks. We felt earthquakes all the time. Just little ones. They were so common that in school, the teacher didn't even break stride, just kept talking. Only kids from other states would ask what was happening. I was there in '64. That did make an impression. But I was never afraid of earthquakes until I moved to California... kept worrying that I would fall off into the ocean.. Still here and still haven't got oceanfront property. I live about thirty miles from the ocean and would feel much safer in Fairbanks than L.A. I'll be there in 11 days. Can't wait!
qood day to all the people around the world who come again every day to the arcticcam!!!25 celcius today ,here in Aegean sea!!
Jmailman1999, Yes we have felt shaking from earthquakes. Ground movement has been seen in Fairbanks as waves moving through the forest with the larger more distant ones like the Good Friday 1964 and Denali Fault 2002. Smaller ones from around magnitude 5 and up are usually felt. The ones over 7 are more fun. The local site: www.aeic.alaska.edu/ gives a map of Alaska with recent activity, and a place for folks to report when they feel one.
Good morning Fairbanks. Looks like another beautiful day.
Miles
Reprise8, Thanks for the information. I checked out the site. Thanks for providing this valuable information. It was cool to be able to see all the earthquakes that has happened lately. One question though, have you ever had a earthquake big enough that the ground shook? I just find Fairbanks to be incredible. The scenery. The wildlife. The helpful people. Mother Nature. And everything else.
rvonsr, Thanks for the response. I really appreciate it when I ask a question and people make every attemp to answer them!
Fairbanks is so beautiful! I love it here, I've been here 29 years and never get tired of it(OK, maybe at -40), the scenery can be breathtaking(driving down the highways) and the people are friendly. I like that everything is a ten minute drive or less and when you go somewhere it's almost a guarantee you're gonna run into someone you know. You can even make accidental eye contact with a stranger and usually get a smile, maybe that's why when people come to visit from the lower 48 they love it. I read the other day that some lady from New York stayed at a b&b and forgot to put her jewelry away before she left for the day and was amazed that they were still there when she got back from her day trip. Most Alaskans I know are not only friendly but honest to boot. Oh yeah, Healy has the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen anywhere in Alaska.
Jmailman - technically, rvonsr is correct. Alaska is in fact one of the most active earthquake areas. However, Alaska is almost a continent in itself. Most of the activity is rather far - mainly in the Aleutians. Go here
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/rece...
You can zoom in to see more detail
Jmailman, Alaska is the most active earthquake region on the Northern Continent.
does fairbanks ever get earthquakes? after hearing about the one down by denali national park it just made me wonder.
I heard the El Sambraro (spelling) burnt down? My husband and I ate there several times last year. Way back when... it used to be the
"Gold Pan Trading Post"...Does anyone remember it being that?
Liz
What a beautiful morning!!!! Someone wrote last week about pizza in Fairbanks. I for one miss the pizza in Fairbanks. I miss Geraldo's and Gamberdella's. Geraldo's was right down the street from our house and it was/is the best pizza. My huband just commented the other day about missing the pizza. We currently live in Kentucky and all they have are the chain pizza places. Nothing good here.
tntmedic - so glad you are enjoying Fairbanks/Alaska. When my husband was transferred there I was not happy about it. But as you can see, I came to love it more than my home in Maryland. That drive you make from Delta Junction is a very beautiful one. Enjoy it.
Okay, let me apologize. I typed what i wanted to say wrong. please forgive me. I didn't mean to call all native alaskans greedy. what i meant to say is that it shoulds like those in the doyon company are greedy from what i heard. the truth is that I have no right to judge anyone because I don't know them personally. once again, please accept my apology and don't hold it agaisnt me. Fairbanks will someday be my home and I really don't want everyone hating me when i arrive.
Well, I am officially stunned. I mistakenly thought that the one place on the FDNM site where people would not offer up a single negative comment would be on the Arctic Cam site, but what do you know...folks like danzop think this is a good place to offer commentary on Doyon being "greedy."
Unreal.
To visitors from Outside who are visiting the Arctic Cam site as you prepare for your vacation to the Golden Heart City, don't let such rantings dissuade you. We truly are the Golden Heart City, it's just that like any city, our Golden Heart has a few black spots that aren't representative of the city as a whole.
Mailman, Just like everyone else not all natives are greedy but the ones that are set bad examples and are the ones most noted for their actions. Enough of that Alaska (Fairbanks) is still the greatest place I've been. I Drove up a friends truck and was going to stay for 2 weeks and never crossed the state line for 19 years. Been here 28 years.
Jmailman1999, Danzop may like the word greedy, but it may just be a method of looking out for themselves. There were preferential jobs benefits in Alaska long before the the native corporations. Our federal government set some great examples: service members who enlisted in Alaska did not get COLA for being 'overseas' if posted in Alaska during WWII; Empolyees hired 'outside' were given annual paid trips, along with all family members, back to their point of hire. The Aleuts on the Pribilofs Islands were held in servitude until after statehood. What about the mass slaughter of marine mammals by US ships after the Territory was purchased? That near annihilation of of sea life a century ago led to the starvation and death of many coastal natives. It may be best to study some history before casting judgement.
Danzop, wow, it sounds like they are greedy! I didn't think native alaskas would be greedy like that. Thanks for your input!
Mailman, You name it Doyon has its hands in it. They are a very large privately owned Native corp. with about 14000 shareholders today originally 9000 plus were given 12.5 million acres of landby the goverment. They have expanded into various properties tourism maintenance drilling ect of which they get a Native preference on the jobs that bid then hire a large number of none members to do the work without the same benefits as members. They are a very greedy corporation but good at getting what they want from the goverment.
Almost forgot, Daily News Miner's own Dermot Cole was on Weather Channel last weekend, commenting on their feature of the 1925 Serum Run to Nome.
It was a repeat from 3/23/2008
alyukon,
I was'nt trying to promote vandalism by asking someone to write a message to us in the lower 48. I'm sorry that I offened you or anyone else. Please forgive me and I hope no one holds that statement against me. Have a great day....
Liz
1948, thank you for clearing that up. that was a good idea. to bad the government doesn't do that all the time. i know that the doyon company has a really nice building. what does their foundation do?
jmailman1999, Doyon was created as part of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act which was signed by Nixon in 1971. For more details go to : http://www.ancsa.net/law/ancsa
Basically Alaska was sectioned into 13 regional areas and corporations were established to benefit the native residents. It was a much nicer way to treat the descendents of those whose ancestors migrated in from the west thousands of years ago, than the methods used in the contiguous states.
Leaving for home on the 29th-ANTICIPATATION! Looking forward to being back in my home State for a month.Enjoy the cams of FBKS very much & the folks who visit.
Greetings from Oregon! I'll be moving up in June and can't wait to see all the sights that I have read about here!
Thanks WWOLFRAVEN for your response. I guess the best thing for me to do is to come up and do an apartment search. The Fairbanks courthouse is NICE! Can anyone tell me anything about the Doyon Corporation. I was reading about it last night but still don't quiet understand why it was created very good. Please explain.
Cruising, where in NY do you live? I am also from NY and will be in FB the week before you. Taking a cruise/tour?
Cruising - If you look above the Arctic Cam picture it says "about the Artic Cam" If you click on that it will tell you the location of the web cam and what is in the picture.
Sue
Hi Everyone,
Can someone give me an exact address of this artic cam in Fairbanks? We're coming to visit your beautiful state and will be in Fairbanks on June 1 and 2 and I'd love to be able to wave to the folks back in NY. Thanks ever so much for your help. Lori
jmailman1999, there are some units for rent on Boundary road, which is right down the street, to the right of this cam view. I rented there for 2 years. The view was o.k. but the proximity to the Chena was fantastic if you like to fish..
Hey Fairbanks. Do you have any nice apartments downtown? If there are, any with a good view? What does rent go for up there?
Hi. I love to come to the site every day I can, and enjoy the comments made, but please don't encourage people to write on the parking lot or buildings, it's vandlisam pure and simple. mick
Magnut,Thanks so much for the flim on the river breakup and all of the others they were great.. Looked at them all . What highway were you on? And where were coming from, pretty wild trip..Love this site love reading all of your commets.. Have a great day. Hope to see you soon.. Harriett
oh, my goodness............will be in FB on the 26th for the beginning of our 2 week visit to AK............hope we get to see some of what tntmedic is writing about...the wonderful scenery and the wildlife
I'm still seeing the "hi" on there!
When I stopped by the cam the other day, it looked like someone used some heavy duty tape, didn't look like it was going anywhere anytime soon!
Gorgeous, gorgeous weather around here. I especially love the drive down to Delta Junction, where you can see the rain coming down over the mountains long before you get a sprinkle or two. Lots of cloud cover out there today... aside from Donnely Dome, a lot of the range was behind clouds.
Saw some awesome wildlife at Quartz Lake today, including a momma moose who was not thrilled to see my car between her and her baby. We just sat still until momma was able to call her wayward calf back to her side. But amazing to watch!
Back up to North Pole Tuesday!
oh...I thought it was chalk but it did last a while....tape is a good idea.
Thanks, Liz
The 'HI' was actually taped on the pavement. I'll try to go by tomorrow and see if it's been taken up. If so, maybe all we're seeing is the cleaner pavement.
You know I would love to write a message to everyone but it is 5,000 miles away....and when I come in Feb. there will probably be snow covering the ground.
Liz
The "HI" washed off the parking lot....so who is going down there to write another message to all of us.....
Liz
Quick question for those living in Fairbanks, Alaska. Are there any downtown apartments that have a good view? I wanna rent a apartment but I want it to have a good downtown view. Does that exist in Fairbanks?
yup... mosquitos are definately out. we're off the valdez for a couple days to play, ourselves.
Miganut Thanks for the link to the breakup I have been taken chances on the break up for a while now can't seem to get by with out sending a few guesses in.Hope to get there again someday Binghamton NY is warm when i look at the temp up there
100 degrees here in Ca. today! Thank goodness I will be home in North Pole Wed. night!
Cyba, If you want to see our June weather records go to this National Weather Service page:
http://www.arh.noaa.gov/climate.php?stni...
If you are here during a cool, perhaps drizzly, spell the daytime highs
may only get around 50F (10C); but a hot spell may mean highs near 95F (35C) and overnight only cooling down to near 68F (20C). We just take what we get and stay adaptable. Remember that rain is good since it reduces the chance of wildfires and smoke filled air. You can see farther on rainy days than we could in 2004 under the shroud of smoke, and breathing is much nicer.
Even on warmer days loose fitting long sleeves help make the mosquitoes less of an issue, without using chemicals on your skin.
I suggest a "sweatsuit" or "windbreaker" jacket/ pants outfit- Something easy to pop-on over your T-shirt and shorts... It can be delightful, sunny, bright, warm....then...as the sun slips behind a cloud..even briefly..the temperature can plummet. Our thermometer read 86 in direct sunlight.. when the clouds hid the sun, it quickly dropped to 66.
Hello from Oklahoma everyone! Only 3 more weeks til my daughter and I get to Fairbanks. Woo Hoo!! Looks like things are beginning to green up there. Polarmark, are the mosquitoes out yet? Wish I knew for sure what the temps will be. It's hard to know whether to bring long sleeves, short sleeves, or just maybe both. . Here in Southern Oklahoma it's supposed to be 90 this week end, but we have had such a nice cool spring which is unusual for down here. Does it rain in June there? Fairbanks will be the first Alaskan city that we see and I think that's neat. Can't wait!!!
good morning fairbanks im glad im not at work today though if construction becomes busier my saturdays will not be in the morning;afternoon sunshine.definetly in the midnight sun! time to get out of the house. have a good one
Redclaymud Great pictures, the Nenana seems to move more swiftly than the Tanana when it breaks up. The Tanana is bigger and more ponderous. I was lucky in 1973 when I filmed the Tanana breakup. check out the link. Who would ever thought I would put it on the internet (the what???) thirty five years later.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjJsMWItR...
Good morning Fairbanks! How is everyone doing this fine Saturday morning? Hope everyone has a great day! I hope to see everyone someday really soon!
PanoMan, Thanks for the link. It was kind of neat to see what the results would be. My husband and I both did the survey. Guess we will live in different parts of the country! Interesting...
Hi all,
I caught the Chena River ice breakup a little over a week ago. You can view it on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBINN5ooZ...
That's a great sign of warm days ahead.
More gas prices: we paid $4.06 in North Pole yesterday, and it's $4.16 in Delta Junction today.
Guess I will tell the name of the place, at the Windsong Lodge
Oh, mentioning pizza.........one of the best pizzas I ever ordered came from Seward,Alaska.....won't mention the restaurant's name...
Thanks VerbumSap!
Funny I had pizza for dinner tonight - not too good though. It's getting harder and harder to find good pizza in New York City but I guess it pretty much impossible in Fairbanks. I am sure Fairbanks has its specialties. I will visit Fairbanks someday. It sounds like a wonderful place. I know I am not tough enough to live there however. I know my limitations.
Welcome WeaseyinNYC!
I love living here, but I sometimes miss the shopping in NYC and DC. Sure wish someone would send me some NY Pizza. I was going to order some from New York Flying pizza, but the shipping alone was $175 for four pies! I called Lombardi's to see if they would ship me some, but no luck there either. May I miss NY pizzas!
If you want to take an online test to find places you might want to live, you can go to: http://www.findyourspot.com/Default.asp
Kinda fun, and maybe even helpful to someone really looking.
Hi! I've been visiting the cam for months now. I decided to register and join the conversation. I am a happy (pretty much) New York City dweller but I love taking a break or two (or three)in my day and visit the state that has the midnight sun, the auroa borealis, 60 degrees below 0(!). Maybe it's not magic but it sure feels like it!
Danzop,
Thanks for the information! I wanna live in Fairbanks so badly. Don't ever move to Pennsylvania. It is all taxation without representation. Have a good day.
jmailman,North Pole is 13 miles SE of Fairbanks. The economy has slowed some from the last couple of booming years but still strong.
Summerkid, Thank you for the prices and Liz, yes I did check it out. I may call about that one. You may be a contractor, but atleast its a job. How far is North Pole from Fairbanks? Isn't it like five miles or so?
jmailman1999,
Did you check out the posting for mail carrier in N.P.?
Liz
(jmailman) the gas prices in Fairbanks are around the same price you are paying $3.89 for unleaded and $4.25 for Deisel
No one seems to want to answer my question. What is the price of gas and diesel in Fairbanks? In Indiana, PA it is $3.85 for unleaded gas and $4.85 for on road diesel. Hope someone answers my question. Also, with the cost of living, how is the economy in Fairbanks holding up?
(This comment was removed by the Newsminer.com staff.)
Grizzly siting . . . here in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dumb @$$ news reporter this morning reported it so it must be true. HA! It was later determined that *IF* it was a bear, it was a black bear and not a grizzly. "YA THINK????" I did send them a photo of what a REAL grizzly looks like from our trip to Denali in 2006 :)
Von
djkssmith: Come to the Upper Midwest. There are many cities the size of Fairbanks, and many folks enjoy hunting, fishing, water sports, snowmobiling and so on. In Wisconsin, the highest skiing "mountain" is about 800 feet, so your ears won't hurt. In most places, temps range from 90s in the summer to 20 below zero in winter. heyjudew
the sign for the Big Eye is back wooooooooo whooooooooooooo
Good morning everyone! I'm a new-comer to the cam but not to Fairbanks. I've lived here for 32 years. I just moved back after living in denver for 2 yrs. I couldn't take the altitude there it hurt my ears. My husband is still there wrapping everything up then he'll be up here in a couple of months. I love Alaska but he doesn't like the winters here so we gotta figure out a new place to move to. My question to you all - Is there any other place out there that is like fbks? I want a smaller town, a good place to raise a family and I don't like it too hot! :)
Hey folks there was only one winner this year of the Nenana Ice Classic...
An Anchorage woman, Colleen Cloutier, will receive a $303,895.00 check on June 1 for having the only entry among 243,776 to correctly predict a tripod set up on the Tanana River would be tipped by moving ice at 10:53 p.m. AST May 6. LINK: http://ap.alaskajournal.com/stories/stat....
She is the Classic's Biggest winner ever.
Lucky lady!
For more (FREE), Alaska information; < www.nps.gov/aplic/center/ > go for the Fairbanks office, they are more personalized! They are located on Cushman, Downtown, 2 blocks South from the cams. A must for State Information!

YOUR WELCOME Panionuios hope you have a good day.
Liz,
If your in the Postal Union, you make good money (about $20+ a hour)However, for contractors like myself, you make very little money. All the money you make goes into vehicle expenses. Plus, with us, there are no benefits, bonuses etc, while with the union employees, they get large bonuses each year and the complete benefit package. RD Carriers have it the best of anyone. Driving in the snow is not that bad, if you use common sense and slow down. Some people wanna drive like its summer and that is why there are so many accidents. I hope this information was helpful.
HEY RAIN . . . a sure sign that spring has spring in Fairbanks!
jmailman1999,
I'm curious to see how much the pay is, my x-inlaws both worked for the postal service and made good money and retired very comfortable. I'm also interested but concerned about driving in snow & ice fog. I moved to Fl when I was 12 yrs. old so I never got to drive in snow in Va where I was born.
Liz
Thanks Liz! I will check it out. It would be great to finally live in Alaska. I am a part time driver for a contractor for the postal service.
jmailman1999,
Are you a mail carrier by chance?? North Pole is hiring mail carriers, if you get a job with them you won't have to go back to PA. The job is listed in the classifieds on the news miner.
Liz :)
Hey Fairbanks, Alaska from Clymer, Pennsylvania. I can't wait to get up to visit. The only thing is when I do get there, I am not coming back to PA! Just wondering, what is the cost of gasoline this morning? Worst yet, how about Diesel fuel? In PA, gas is $3.85 and diesel is $4.85. Yuck.
Good morning Fairbanks,
Fairbanks looks beautiful this morning, even in the rain
Have a Wonderful Day :)
Liz
