Is the Hot Tamale restaurant still open down there in the parking lot? They have the best Mexican food next to Southern California. I love their Friday buffets.

You can get the Milepost at the base exchange, Walmart or Fred Meyer
Frank- we'll be in Fairbanks Sunday afternoon. I'll probably poke around town on Monday while my husband is inprocessing, somewhere between 8 and noon Alaska time. You'll know it's us because I'll be the lady in the parking lot holding a baby and waving wildly at the cam. :)
Any regulars who actually see me, let me know!
Kathy or anyone who knows: where do we find a MILEPOST? Sounds like it would be a great way to learn our new surroundings.
Hello Alaskans! Aren't we loving our weather!! I am relatively new to AK...can a more experienced Alaskan tell me when it is safe to plant my flowers outside???? thanks!!
ps. hi MOM Ruthann H.!
tntmedic: you will be arriving in fairbanks in just a couple of hours. how do I know when you are waving, in german time? I am 10 hours ahead of fairbanks...:-((
I guess I just have to come there myself and wave. unfortunately, by the time I get there the whole view that I am used to will be torn down..:-((
Hi,
I have been watching this for months! I totally love it. I am from New England (down the in lower 48). To answer the question about 'Big Y', there is actually a grocery store chain that is called that!
My dream is to retire in Alaska. I am so fascinated by the beauty.
Good afternoon from Washington State.
We are 41 miles from Ritzville and looking forward to eating at the golden Corral Buffet in Spokane. We really made a good choice yesterday when we went west instead of north into Montana. They got snow and we didn't even get rain. It would have been rough going up those mountains with snow on them.
A little personal history: my Dad was a Railroad Engineer and came to Alaska in 1947, Mom and I followed him from Masdison Wisconsin in 1948. We lived in Healy until January of 1950 then went back to Wisconsin and settled in Milwaukee.
After my husband retired from the Navy he wanted to try out the free military hops and asked me if I wanted to try it. Of course I said yes and asked where we could go. He said Hawaii --- Alaska --- I said ALASKA?? lets go there so I can see if it is magical as I remember it. So in 1992 we took our first hop up. Roger was thrilled and asked me if I wanted to come back {of course you know what I said} and we came back in late August 1993 and saw the Northern Lights on our way back from Ester Gold Camp. We took the train from Fairbanks to Anchorage and on the trip down Roger, who was now completely hooked asked me if I would like to buy some land here and {you know what I said!!} So in 1994 we bought 10 acres out Chena Hot Springs Road. It had a cabin on it so we had an instant summer place in Alaska.
Since that time we have driven round trip from Southern California to the cabin 10 times and love every mile of it. It never gets old and never seems like a chore. We take our time {about two weeks one way} so it is a pleasure. We have driven up in a truck, car and motor home. I highly recommend the drive even if you can't take your time like we do.
If you have ever thought about driving up, get your self a MILEPOST Magazine and it will give you a mile by mile description of everything you will see and can do like attractions, motels, restaurants, historical sites etc. Feel free to ask any questions about the trip and I will be happy to try and answer them.
